| The new truck sitting on top of a mountain |
I'm loving Bonanza. We have two restaurants, (one with a tiny casino), post office, library, 2 gas stations and a medical clinic all within less than a three block walk. I can deal with that.
The weather here has been gorgeous so far. Though we are starting to have some 30º nights, the temperature swing can be some 60º. It was 34º when I got out of bed this morning and the predicted high is 79º!!! I'm wondering just how cold it's really going to get here come January. The average January low is listed as being 16.7º. Brrrrrrrrrr............... However, they do only average 39.9 inches of snow per year. And, The Farmers Almanac is predicting a mild winter for this area. I hope it's right! We're planning to wrap Styrofoam around the slide walls to keep the warmth in. Not the face of the slides - just the ends, top and bottom where the seals are to try and keep out some of the cold. We had an external 120 gallon propane tank set because the propane companies here will not fill directly to a motorhome, even though we have a 69 gallon tank. Beats me what their reason might be, other than dollars and cents! We've had direct fill from the propane people in both Georgia and Florida before. Jim was just determined that he did not want to pull out and go across the street to have our tank filled. He didn't like the idea of probably having to unhook to do that in temperatures in the teens. OK, so I'll go along with him on that.

Klamath Falls is a 20 minute drive and there's a good amount of shopping there, including the much loved Super-Walmart! There are a lot of stores they don't have - like Bed Bath and Beyond, A Chevy dealer, Red Lobster, Olive Garden, and most of the things you see in the big malls. But there is a Denny's, and a restaurant that I love called The Black Bear Diner. We first discovered them when we were in California for Jim's job in 2008, and we were thrilled to see one here. The Longhorn Saloon here in Bonanza is good too, and the owner is a sweetheart and extremely accommodating for the guys that are here working on the pipeline. She stays open later (til everyone that wants is fed), and started opening at 5AM so they could have breakfast too. I'll stop in sometimes when I have to walk down to the Post Office, and they always have coffee on, and lots of good chit chat.
We have yet to find the Ponderosa ranch. ☺ The ranches here (not farms) are huge. Many working ranches are more than 100,000 acres! They raise hay, cattle, and the big crop is potatoes!! Good potatoes too. When the Right-of-Way was going through a potato farm the farmer told the guys to come pick all they wanted for free!! The teens next to us went and dug probably 200 pounds of them. I have about 30 pounds in the basement hoping they'll stay cool enough to last until I can use them all up. Since Jim loves scalloped potatoes, guess what we're having a lot of? ☺
Sean, Jim's boss's son-in-law just got in last week. He's going to work on the line too, but he is a registered hunting guide (big game) and his Black Lab just had a litter of eight beautiful pups! Her mama was a chocolate lab and her papa was a black lab. The pups papa is a yellow lab (BIG one). There are four yellows, three blacks, and one absolutely GORGEOUS chocolate. When they get a little bigger, I'll put up a picture of the litter.
Now, on to something else. My daughter-in-law is doing the 3-day 60 mile walk in Atlanta next month. Did you know that in order to walk in that, the participants have to meet a fund raising goal? they spend an entire year raising funds and she's not quite there yet. You can donate in a couple of different ways. You can donate directly by going here and clicking on the button at the almost top left that says "Click to donate to Jennifer in 2010!" (her name is Jennifer Wright) or you can shop online at WomanAWeekShopping and she gets ALL the proceeds from your online shopping for the months of September and October. Shopping there will get her half of all the proceeds the remainder of the year. (And yes, direct donations are tax-deductible) So donate, or at least shop online!
